Week 7: Portfolio Introduction & Analysis Essay


3/9 Monday

  • Discuss Portfolio Keeping pp.1-16: Understanding Portfolio
  • Discuss High Order and Low Order Revision
  • Portfolio Day: Generating ideas for revising your Proposal or Review blog posts
  • Assignment: Read JTC Chapter 7, pp.216-217
  • Assignment: Read the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights”
  • Assignment: Post on Online Discussion Board 8 Pick at least two items from the “UDHR” and discuss what you think about them. For example, do you think the items that you picked are well protected in the United States? Do you think every country has a similar standard toward the “UDHR”?

3/11 Wednesday

  • Analysis Essay Introduction: Define your role as an interpreter
  • Review JTC Chapter 7, pp.216-217: What is an analytical essay?
  • Review the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights”
  • Assignment: Martha Nussbaum’s “Human Rights and Human Capabilities”
  • Assignment: Bring the “UDHR”
  • Assignment: Post on Online Discussion Board 9 Put the “UDHR” and Martha Nussbaum’s list of human capabilities together. What differences can you find from these two writings? Choose one similar item and then compare and contrast them

3/13 Friday

  • Discuss Martha Nussbaum in comparison with the “UDHR”: Make analytical comments
  • Learn analytical skills to summarize, paraphrase and quote
  • In-class activity: What is an appropriate paraphrasing?
  • Assignment: Frederick Douglass, Narrative of the Life of Frederic Douglass, Ch.1
  • Assignment: Bring both the “UDHR” and Nussbaum piece
  • Assignment: Post on Online Discussion Board 10 Write an analytical response to the Frederick Douglass piece. Compare the genres between the Douglass’s autobiography and the written declarations like the “UDHR” or Nussbaum’s list. Which genre is more effective to convey the message? Do these writings target different audiences?

  • In-class Workshop: Which item of the “UDHR” or Nussbaum’s list of human capabilities does correspond to Douglass’s narrative?
  • Assignment: Read Emmeline Pankhurst, “I Incite This Meeting to Rebellion”
  • Assignment: Bring both the “UDHR” and Nussbaum piece
  • Assignment: Post on Online Discussion Board 11 Write a short analytical response to Pankhurst. Imagine her response to either the “UDHR” or the Nussbaum’s list

3/25 Wednesday

  • Review Emmeline Pankhurst
  • In-class workshop: Pick one quote from Pankhurst and unpack it. Make a connection between this quote to one item from the “UDHR” or the Nussbaum’s list
  • Assignment: Read Denise Brennan, “Selling Sex for Visas: Sex Tourism as a Stepping-stone to International Migration”
  • Assignment: Bring both the “UDHR” and Nussbaum piece

3/27 Friday

  • Discuss Denise Brennan
  • How to write a good analysis paper: Briefly go over JTC p.232-260
  • In-class workshop: Make a choice of your analysis
  • Assignment: Prepare first draft of Analysis Paper (Review JTC p.232-260)
  • Assignment: Bring your draft in hard copy
